Access to clean water remains a major challenge in many parts of Kenya, where over 18 million people lack safe and reliable water sources. Schools in mountain ecosystems, such as those near the Aberdares, often face severe water shortages, impacting students’ health, hygiene, and learning conditions.

In response to this pressing need, Rhino Ark, in partnership with Rhino Ark UK, has been leading a rainwater harvesting initiative to provide sustainable water solutions to schools in the region.
Delivering a Lifeline to Schools
On March 17, 2025, Rhino Ark officially handed over three water tanks to Metha, Kariki, and Kiandogoro Comprehensive Schools in the Aberdares region. These tanks will allow schools to harvest rainwater, ensuring a reliable supply of clean drinking water, supporting tree nurseries, and improving sanitation facilities for students and teachers.

The event was attended by Rhino Ark’s Deputy Executive Director of Operations, Moses Muthoki, alongside Fence & Community Manager – Aberdare-Mt Kenya Landscape, Adam Mwangi, and Head of the Conservation Education Programme, Peter Munene. Representatives from the Kenya Wildlife Service, school board officials, teachers, and pupils also joined in celebrating this milestone, highlighting the impact of conservation-driven initiatives on local communities.
A Community-Driven Impact
This initiative was made possible by the incredible support of our Rhino Ark UK community, whose tireless efforts continue to transform lives. In particular, we extend our deepest gratitude to the London Marathon 2024 runners and Ride London 2024 cyclists, whose fundraising efforts directly enabled the expansion of this programme to six more schools. Their dedication has been instrumental in ensuring that more students benefit from sustainable water solutions, improving their well-being and fostering conservation awareness.
Beyond these events, Rhino Ark UK continues to support conservation efforts through various fundraisers. One of the most exciting upcoming events is the UK Rhino Challenge, scheduled for May 4, 2025.
