On 14th March 2025, Rhino Ark had the honour of hosting a delegation from the European Union (EU) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) at our conservation initiatives in Ndoinet Forest, in South Western Mau. This visit is part of a newly approved project via WWF, aimed at enhancing forest conservation and community engagement in the region.
A Model for Community-Led Conservation
The visit provided an opportunity to showcase key community-driven initiatives that are making a tangible difference in protecting Kenya’s forests. Among the highlights were:

The Model Tree Nursery
One of Rhino Ark’s flagship initiatives, this tree nursery supports forest restoration efforts by providing high-quality seedlings for reforestation. The nursery not only contributes to habitat regeneration but also offers an alternative income source for local communities through the sale of seedlings.
The Beekeeping Initiative
Sustainable livelihoods go hand in hand with conservation, and the beekeeping project in Ndoinet is a perfect example. By engaging local farmers in honey production, we are helping reduce dependence on forest resources while promoting pollination, which benefits both the ecosystem and agricultural productivity.

Community Scouts: Guardians of the Forest
Local communities play a vital role in conservation, and the Ndoinet Community Scouts are at the frontline of protecting forests and wildlife. These dedicated individuals help monitor illegal activities, prevent deforestation, and educate their fellow community members on the importance of environmental conservation.
A New Chapter for Ndoinet Forest
The EU and WWF visit was not just a showcase of past successes but also a step toward scaling up conservation efforts in the region. This newly approved project will bring additional support for:

- Expanding forest restoration programmes
- Strengthening community involvement in conservation
- Enhancing alternative livelihood projects
- Improving monitoring and protection of forest ecosystems
The involvement of partners like the EU and WWF reinforces our commitment to ensuring the long-term protection of Kenya’s vital water towers and biodiversity.
