PROVIDING CONSERVATION EDUCATION

In Aberdares, over 600 children from upto 100 schools participate in the 400 km Aberdare Fence Relay Run. The program aims to equip pupils with the relevant knowledge to encourage and empower them to be proactive in the practice of environmental conservation in their daily lives. Key elements of the program are implementation of comprehensive conservation education curricula for both primary and secondary schools. In May 2019, a similar conservation education program was rolled to 46 schools adjacent to the South Western Mau Forest ecosystem.

The purpose of the Run is to have the schools that neighbour the Aberdare Fence to take part in a relay race around the Aberdare ecosystem. The Run aims at raising awareness among the youth living around the Aberdare ecosystem of the importance of conserving this critical water tower, which provides, among others, most of the drinking water for Nairobi and the urban centers located around the ecosystem. The Run also provides an opportunity to appreciate the benefits derived from the electric fence, which has reduced tremendously reduce human-wildlife conflicts around the Aberdares and assisted in curbing illegal activities in the forest.
