As we step into the New Year, we reflect on the incredible strides made in 2024 and the dedicated efforts of our team that made it all possible. The past year was truly transformational for Rhino Ark, marked by unprecedented milestones across conservation, innovation, and community engagement. Here’s a look back at some of our major achievements and their significance:

1. Expanding Our Conservation Reach: Four Fencing Projects in Progress
2024 marked the first time in Rhino Ark’s history that we simultaneously worked on four fencing projects.
- South Western Mau: We initiated an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study to kick off this critical conservation effort.
- Kakamega and Mt. Kenya Fencing Projects: Progress continued steadily, ensuring the protection of vital ecosystems.
- Aberdares: Completed 12 kilometers of fencing, reinforcing the preservation of this iconic landscape.
These projects are instrumental in mitigating human-wildlife conflict, protecting endangered species, and ensuring sustainable co-existence between communities and nature.
2. Endangered Species Recovery & Reintroduction
- Black Rhino Sanctuary in the Aberdares: A pivotal step towards safeguarding this critically endangered species.
- Mountain Bongo Reintroduction: Significant momentum in the reintroduction project within Ragati and Chehe forests on Mt. Kenya, backed by robust stakeholder support.

These initiatives are crucial for restoring Kenya’s biodiversity and reversing the decline of species that are key to the ecological balance of these landscapes.
3. Innovation in Wildlife Management
In 2024, Rhino Ark was at the forefront of developing cutting-edge wildlife management technologies:
- Virtual Elephant Grids: Revolutionizing elephant movement management.
- Hyena Detection and Deterrence Systems: Mitigating human-wildlife conflict through technology.
Such innovations enhance the effectiveness of conservation practices, reducing the pressure on communities while protecting wildlife populations.
4. Record-Breaking Fundraising and Securing Major Grants
- Rhino Charge 2024: Raised an astonishing KES 325.8 million—the highest amount ever raised in a single event. This will enable the establishment of a new endowment fund to secure Rhino Ark’s financial stability.
- EU Grant: Secured a historic KES 347.3 million grant for the conservation of the southern part of the Mau.

These financial milestones allow us to expand conservation programs, empower communities, and implement large-scale eco-tourism and restoration initiatives.
5. Strengthening Leadership
We were delighted to welcome Moses Muthoki and Gloria Waswa as Deputy Executive Directors, adding strength to our leadership team.
As our programmes expand, strong leadership ensures effective implementation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable growth.
6. Public Relations & Media Outreach
2024 saw the highest number of published news items and articles about Rhino Ark’s work—averaging over three per week!
- Our Aberdare Yetu campaign against the proposed road through the Aberdares gained significant traction and support.

Raising public awareness is key to inspiring action, fostering collaboration, and building momentum for conservation efforts.
Looking Ahead
With these achievements, we are excited to continue expanding our positive impact on Kenya’s landscapes and communities. 2025 holds the promise of even greater milestones, as we deepen our commitment to conserving biodiversity, empowering communities, and driving innovation.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to our team, partners, and supporters for making 2024 a landmark year for Rhino Ark. We can achieve even more together. Here’s to a successful and impactful 2025!
