International Day for Biological Diversity 2023

May 22

The International Day for Biological Diversity, also known as World Biodiversity Day, is celebrated on May 22, 2023 each year.

Between 1993 and 2000 the annual day was held on December 29 to celebrate the date the Convention on Biological Diversity went into effect. In 2000 the date was shifted to May 22 to commemorate the adoption of the Convention  at the Rio Earth Summit.

The UN General Assembly declared 2011-2020 the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. This decade served to support and promote implementation of the objectives of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, with the goal of significantly reducing biodiversity loss.

Biodiversity is the degree of variation of life forms within a given species, ecosystem, biome, or an entire planet. It is a measure of the health of ecosystems and is in part a function of climate.
