3 June 2008 - Rhino Charge Raises Over Shs 63 Million

Rhino Charge 2008 held on Sunday (June 1) at Namunyak in Samburu District, raised Shs. 63,638,135.28 (USD 1 Million) in the event’s 20th anniversary.

The event was won by Alan McKittrick and team (McKittrick/Knight/Hutchinson/Trundell) in Car No. 5 scoring 62.31kms over all 13 guard posts.

Second overall was Mark Glen ( Glen /Llewellyn) in Car No.48 scoring 72.43 kms over 13 guard posts.

Third position was taken by Sean Avery in Car No.38 who covered 13 guard posts with a long distance of 78.34-kms.

The Alan McKittrick team won the most prestigious Victor Ludorum trophy - shortest distance to the highest money raised, followed by Sean Avery in Car No.38 and third position went to Ben Woodhams in Car No.39.

The highest sponsorship of shs.9,395,551.86-million was also raised by Car No.5 of Alan McKittrick. He also won the modified vehicles category/ Class “M”.

Second highest sponsorship came from Car No.22 of Sarah and Mike Higgins. They raised Shs. 4,261,390.20 million.

The unmodified vehicles category was won by entrant John Bowden a Land Rover Hybrid 90.

The third highest cash sponsorship of Shs.3,414,323.84 was raised by Car No.39 of Ben Woodhams.

Car 5 in action

The Gauntlet was won by Terry Childs in Car No.49 a Range Rover.

Tiger Line 1 was won by Mark Glen in Car No.48 a 2-door Range Rover. Tiger Line 2 was won by Ian Duncan driving Car No.2 a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Speaking during the function, the guest of honour the area MP Mr. Raphael Letimalo said “My people honour conservation. In my Samburu East constituency alone there are seven conservancies. We have co-existed with wild animals for centuries and will continue to do so”

The Rhino Charge raffle to assist the fund raise with over 137 prizes was extremely successful. The main prize – a return ticket to Bangkok for two courtesy of Kenya Airways was won by a sponsor of Car No.20 of Arbi Mussani.

Vulterine guinea fowl at Namunyak

Senior Kenya Wildlife Service people, Rhino Ark’s key partners in the Aberdare fence project attended the charge.

An all girls team Car 60 for Rowena White and team won the Coup Des Dames (Tim Nicklin Trophy).

The coveted Michael Werikhe perpetual trophy donated by the East African Wildlife Society was awarded to Mr. Christian Lambrechts for his sterling efforts in Conservation.

Money raised during the Rhino Charge goes towards the fencing of the Aberdare Conservation Area and National Park spearheaded by Rhino Ark Charitable Trust.

Rhino Ark’s policy for all charges during the event i.e. the camping fees paid by all entrants to the event is donated to the host area community. This totalled to Ssh. 2 million for the Namunyak Group Ranch communities and is to be used for the development of this area.
